The St. Mark's Recreation Academy was created with the aim of:

- increasing student opportunities to be physically active in unique environments outside of the school

- giving students the opportunity to explore their individual talents through activities both in and out of the school

- allowing students to lend their individual talents to the community and gain the benefits of volunteerism

- increasing student knowledge and thus, wellbeing by exploring the importance of balance and wellness in one's life

- empowering students to take control of their own wellness by offering them wellness opportunities through a balance of activities focusing on the body, mind and  spirit

Schedule:

Students who choose to be a part of the Recreation Academy will only have one additional option each week. If they choose a trimestered option, they will still get to try three other options in addition to the Recreation Academy. If they choose a year-long option, they will have the Recreation Academy and one other option all year.

The Recreation Academy participates in recreational activities and volunteering, with a select few lessons and projects in between. Lessons and projects average one Recreation Academy block per month, with the rest being filled with primarily with recreational activities. Please see the  Calendars  to get a sample of what a month looks like.

Academy Student Criteria

  • We are looking for students who are looking to have fun and be adventurous in spirit. Students should be willing to try new things and ready to work on gaining confidence, exploring their talents and acting as a leader through unique activities and opportunities.
  • Due to the variety of activities that operate in an alternative (open) environment (biking, river valley, North Saskatchewan river, various lakes, etc.) students need to operate in an independent and safe manner at all times. This is because the safety of the student is of the utmost importance because direct supervision is not possible at all times.
  • All activities will be offered at an introduction level with proper instruction and support being offered at all times. Students do not need to be of any particular skill-level to join and experience the benefits. This is an inclusive academy.

Students admitted in to the academy are students who demonstrate basic Catholic values in their daily lives. They are expected to demonstrate respect to all of those around them, to be cooperative with staff and other students and to present themselves when in and out of the building in a way that would make Jesus Christ proud. Since our academy students spend a significant amount of time outside of the school, they are often in the role of being representatives of the school. In order to have the privilege of being taken on field trips, students in the academy must demonstrate that they are mature and responsible enough to have this privilege in all classes in the school and when outside of the school.
